Inland Taipan

The most toxic snake venom ever measured — and a species with zero confirmed human deaths.

The inland taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus) lives in the remote, semi-arid interior of Australia. In laboratory tests measuring venom potency, it holds the record for the most toxic venom of any land snake on Earth.

The most potent venom, but not the most dangerous snake

By lethal-dose testing in mice, the inland taipan's venom is measured as more toxic than that of any other terrestrial snake — potent enough that a single bite could theoretically deliver enough venom to kill roughly 100 adult humans. But venom potency and real-world danger aren't the same thing. Since antivenom became available in 1955, there have been zero confirmed human deaths from an inland taipan bite. It lives in places almost no one visits, and it's a notably shy, placid snake that many experienced handlers describe as easy to work with compared to its more aggressive relatives.

Built for hunting rats, not people

The taipan's extreme venom potency isn't really about defense — it evolved to instantly stop a fast, potentially injurious prey animal (a native long-haired rat) before it can fight back or escape into its burrow.

A snake that changes with the seasons

Its coloration shifts through the year: darker in cooler months, likely to absorb more heat, and paler in summer to reflect it — a form of seasonal camouflage and temperature regulation in one.
