Why horsepower is only part of the story, and what should genuinely never go down one.

Garbage disposal shopping is mostly about motor type and horsepower, but what you actually put down the disposal matters just as much as which model you buy.

Horsepower matters, but grinding chamber design matters too

Higher horsepower generally means a disposal can grind tougher food waste more quickly and with less jamming, and handles a higher volume of waste without bogging down — genuinely useful for a busy kitchen or a household that cooks a lot. But the grinding chamber's design, including the number and shape of grinding components, also affects how thoroughly and consistently waste actually gets broken down, meaning two disposals with the same horsepower can perform differently in practice. Continuous-feed vs. batch-feed

Continuous-feed disposals run continuously while switched on, letting waste be added while it's running — the more common, familiar type, generally faster for handling a steady stream of waste during cleanup. Batch-feed disposals only run once a special stopper is inserted and turned, processing one batch of waste at a time before needing to be reset for the next — slower for high-volume use, but the stopper mechanism prevents the disposal from running unless it's specifically engaged, which some households prefer as an added safety measure, particularly with children in the home.

Noise insulation varies significantly between models

Garbage disposal noise levels vary a lot between models, and cheaper units often lack sound-insulating materials that quieter, typically pricier models include around the grinding chamber. For a kitchen open to a living or dining space, checking a specific model's noise level or sound rating is worth doing, since a jarringly loud disposal is a genuine daily annoyance that's hard to fix after installation without replacing the unit.

What should never go down a disposal

Fibrous vegetables (celery, corn husks) can tangle around the grinding mechanism; starchy foods like pasta and rice expand with water and can clog pipes downstream; coffee grounds and eggshells don't grind effectively and can accumulate in pipes over time; and grease or oil solidifies in pipes after going down, regardless of whether it passed through the disposal without issue in the moment. None of these cause immediate problems on the first attempt, which is part of why they're commonly and repeatedly put down disposals despite being poor choices — the damage from grease and fibrous buildup tends to be cumulative rather than an obvious immediate failure.

The one thing people forget

Always run cold water, not hot, while operating a garbage disposal and for a short period afterward. Cold water helps solidify any grease or oil into small pieces that can be ground and flushed through, while hot water can melt grease into a liquid that coats pipes and contributes to clogs further down the line — a small habit that meaningfully affects how much plumbing trouble a disposal causes over its lifetime.
