Smartphone marketing leans hard on a handful of headline numbers — but a few of those numbers are weaker indicators of real-world quality than they sound.

Megapixels are a weaker signal than sensor size

More megapixels means a photo has more individual pixels, but it says nothing about how much light each pixel actually captures. A larger camera sensor gathers more light per pixel, which is what actually drives better photos in typical conditions — especially low light, where a phone with fewer megapixels on a larger sensor often outperforms one with a higher megapixel count crammed onto a smaller sensor. Sensor size is rarely the headline spec in marketing, but it's a better predictor of real photo quality than the megapixel count alone.

Storage: buy more than you think you need

Photos, videos, and apps have all grown steadily larger over time, and unlike a laptop, most phones don't let you add storage later or easily offload to an external drive. Going one tier above what feels sufficient today is usually cheaper than the regret of constantly deleting photos to free up space in year two of ownership.

The spec that isn't advertised loudly: software update commitment

How many years of operating system and security updates a phone will actually receive varies significantly between manufacturers and even between models from the same manufacturer — and it's rarely printed anywhere near the price tag. This matters more than almost any other spec for how long the phone stays secure and usable, and it's worth specifically looking up rather than assuming, since it's the one number manufacturers have the least incentive to put in bold on the box.

Battery capacity numbers are hard to compare directly

A battery's capacity (in mAh) only tells part of the story — actual battery life also depends heavily on the chip's power efficiency and how the screen and software manage power. A phone with a smaller battery but a more efficient chip can genuinely outlast one with a bigger battery and a less efficient one. Independent battery-life test results are a more reliable comparison than the raw mAh number alone.

The one thing people forget

Check the actual repair cost for a cracked screen and a battery replacement before buying, not after you need one. These prices vary enormously between brands and models, and a phone that's cheaper upfront can end up costing more over its lifetime if a single repair is disproportionately expensive.
