A soundbar's channel count is the spec that actually predicts its capability — more meaningful than wattage or brand name for understanding what kind of sound experience it can produce.
What channel numbers actually mean
A soundbar's spec is often listed as numbers like 2.1, 3.1, or 5.1.2. The first number is the count of standard forward-facing audio channels (left, center, right, and so on); the number after the decimal point indicates subwoofer channels (almost always 1, for a single subwoofer handling bass); a third number, when present, indicates up-firing or height channels used for overhead, immersive surround formats. A basic 2.1 soundbar handles stereo sound with a subwoofer for bass — a real improvement over built-in TV speakers, but without the sense of surround sound. Higher channel counts (5.1, 7.1, or configurations with height channels) more closely approximate a full surround sound setup, without necessarily requiring rear speakers scattered around the room.
A wireless subwoofer is worth prioritizing
Bass in particular benefits from separate, dedicated equipment — a wireless subwoofer, placed anywhere in the room without a cable running back to the main soundbar unit, generally produces noticeably fuller, more impactful low-end sound than a compact all-in-one bar trying to reproduce bass from small built-in drivers. For anyone who cares about a satisfying, fuller sound rather than just clearer dialogue than TV speakers provide, a model that includes a real wireless subwoofer is usually worth prioritizing over a compact single-unit bar without one.
Virtual surround vs. real surround
Some soundbars use audio processing to simulate a surround sound effect using only forward-facing speakers, creating an impression of sound coming from the sides or behind through clever signal processing and reflected sound. This can work reasonably well but isn't identical to genuine surround sound from physically separate rear speakers, and results vary meaningfully by room shape and size, since the virtual effect relies partly on sound reflecting off actual room walls. A soundbar system that includes real physical rear speaker units provides more consistent, less room-dependent surround performance, at the cost of more setup and speakers to place around the room.
Format compatibility matters for the source content
Higher-end soundbars support advanced audio formats like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, which include height and directional information for a more immersive experience — but this only matters if the content being watched, and the device it's coming from, actually supports and outputs that same format. A soundbar capable of an advanced format playing content that isn't encoded in that format won't produce the enhanced experience the spec sheet implies.
The one thing people forget
Check how many HDMI inputs a soundbar actually has, and whether it supports passing through 4K and HDR signals, if it's meant to sit between a TV and other devices like a game console or streaming box in the audio/video chain. A soundbar with too few inputs or without proper 4K/HDR passthrough can become an inconvenient bottleneck in a home theater setup, forcing extra cable-switching or a compromise on picture quality.
