Resistance bands look like one of the simplest fitness purchases, but two details — color-coding standards and material — genuinely affect how well a set actually holds up and performs.
Color coding isn't standardized across brands
Resistance bands are commonly color-coded by resistance level (light, medium, heavy, and so on), but there's no universal industry standard tying a specific color to a specific resistance strength — one brand's yellow band and another brand's yellow band can have meaningfully different actual resistance. When switching between brands or replacing a band from a set, checking the actual resistance rating (often listed in pounds or kilograms of resistance) rather than assuming color matches across brands avoids ending up with a band that's much easier or harder than intended.
Latex vs. non-latex material
Natural latex bands are generally the most elastic, durable, and snap back most consistently over repeated use, but pose an obvious issue for anyone with a latex allergy or sensitivity. Non-latex synthetic alternatives (like TPE) avoid that concern and have improved significantly in quality and durability, though some still don't quite match natural latex's elasticity and longevity under heavy, frequent use.
Flat bands vs. tube bands vs. loop bands
Flat bands are versatile for a wide range of exercises and generally the most affordable, but can twist during use if not held carefully. Tube bands (often with handles) resist twisting better and are comfortable to grip for pulling-style exercises. Loop bands (continuous circles, no handles) are especially well suited to lower-body exercises like squats and lateral walks, where a closed loop naturally fits around legs or ankles. Many people end up wanting more than one type, since each suits different exercises better than the others.
Check for wear before every use, not periodically
Resistance bands degrade with UV exposure, ozone, and repeated stretching over time, and a band that's about to fail often shows visible signs first — small cracks, thinning in one area, or a slightly tacky or degraded surface texture. Because a snapping band under tension can cause real injury, particularly to the face if held at head height during certain exercises, a quick visual check before each use is a genuinely worthwhile habit, not excessive caution.
The one thing people forget
Anchor bands securely to something actually rated to hold under tension — a doorframe anchor, a secured point, or your own body weight for many exercises — rather than an improvised anchor point like a doorknob or a lightweight piece of furniture not designed to resist that kind of pulling force. A band itself being in good condition doesn't help if the anchor point fails during use.
