Blacksmithing involves working directly with metal heated to a genuinely glowing, several-hundred-to-thousand-plus-degree temperature, and there's no "easing into" the heat and impact risk the way some hobbies allow gradual skill-building before real risk exposure.
Fuel choice shapes the entire forge setup and ongoing cost
Coal or coke-fired forges are traditional, can reach very high temperatures effectively, but require ongoing fuel sourcing and produce more smoke and combustion byproducts requiring good ventilation. Propane forges are generally cleaner-burning, easier to light and control precisely, and more accessible for a beginner without an established fuel supply chain, though propane and the specific forge equipment have their own upfront cost and require appropriate ventilation and safe gas handling practices.
