Why a phone's GPS is accurate enough for most caches, and the etiquette rules that keep the whole activity sustainable.

Geocaching's equipment barrier is much lower than it might seem — a smartphone handles most of what's needed to start, and the activity's actual etiquette matters more to a good experience than any GPS accuracy specification.

A smartphone's GPS is accurate enough for the vast majority of caches

Modern smartphone GPS accuracy — typically within several meters under normal conditions — is genuinely sufficient for finding the overwhelming majority of geocaches, most of which include additional written hints and clues specifically because GPS alone typically gets a searcher close but not exactly to the hiding spot. A dedicated handheld GPS unit can offer some advantages — better battery life for extended outdoor use, sometimes better signal reception in certain terrain — but it's not a requirement to meaningfully start and enjoy geocaching, and many active geocachers use only a smartphone app for the vast majority of their caching.

"Muggle" awareness is real geocaching etiquette, not just a cute term

Geocachers use the term "muggle" (borrowed from a popular book series) to refer to people unaware of geocaching, and part of standard geocaching etiquette involves being discreet when searching for and re-hiding a cache in public areas specifically to avoid drawing the attention of passersby who might inadvertently disturb, damage, or remove a cache without understanding what it is. This isn't just a fun bit of hobby culture — caches genuinely do get lost or removed when non-geocachers notice unusual activity and investigate, and basic discretion helps a cache remain findable for future searchers.

Always re-hide a cache exactly as it was found

A core, repeated rule in geocaching etiquette is returning a found cache to precisely the same hiding spot and condition it was found in, rather than a more convenient or obvious nearby location — a cache moved even a short distance from its logged coordinates can become difficult or impossible for the next searcher to find, undermining the experience for everyone who searches afterward. This matters more than it might initially seem, since geocaching's whole system depends on caches staying where their published coordinates indicate.

Trackables introduce a real responsibility beyond a normal cache find

Some caches contain "trackables" — items with a unique tracking code meant to travel between caches over time, often with a specific stated goal or journey — and picking one up carries an implicit responsibility to move it to a new cache within a reasonable timeframe, logging its movement online, rather than simply keeping it or leaving it in one place indefinitely. Understanding this expectation before taking a trackable avoids inadvertently disrupting what's meant to be an ongoing, shared journey for that specific item across many different geocachers.

The one thing people forget

Bring a small pen or pencil for signing physical logbooks found inside caches, since many geocaches include a paper log specifically for finders to record their visit, and not every cache reliably includes a working writing implement inside it — a simple, easily forgotten item that turns "found the cache but couldn't log it" into a smooth, complete experience.
