Lumens measure total output, not how far light actually reaches

Lumens measure the total quantity of visible light a headlamp produces, but how far that light usefully reaches depends heavily on the reflector and lens design focusing that output into a beam, not lumens alone. Two headlamps with identical lumen ratings can have meaningfully different maximum beam distances (often listed separately in meters) depending on how tightly or broadly their optics focus the light — checking both numbers, not lumens in isolation, gives a more complete picture of real usable performance for a specific purpose.

Flood vs. spot beam patterns suit different activities

A wide, flood-style beam illuminates a broad area at closer range, useful for camp tasks, reading, or general close-up work where peripheral visibility matters more than distance. A narrow, focused spot beam throws light much further but illuminates a smaller area, better suited to trail running, hiking, or any activity where seeing further ahead matters more than a wide field of view. Many headlamps offer adjustable or combination modes, letting the same light serve both purposes depending on the setting selected.

Red-light mode preserves night vision and reduces disturbance

Many headlamps include a red-light setting, which is significantly less disruptive to the eyes' natural night vision adaptation than white light, and is also less likely to wake or disturb others nearby, such as a shared tent. This isn't a niche feature — it's genuinely useful for anything requiring occasional light without fully resetting night-adapted vision, like checking a map or a piece of gear briefly during an otherwise dark activity.

Battery type affects cold-weather reliability

Standard alkaline batteries lose capacity more noticeably in cold temperatures than lithium batteries, which handle cold conditions considerably better — a real consideration for winter use or high-altitude activities where temperatures regularly drop well below freezing. Rechargeable headlamps offer convenience and lower long-term cost, but need a way to recharge during extended trips without power access, which matters for genuinely remote, multi-day use.

The one thing people forget

Check the actual battery life at the brightness level you'll realistically use most, not just the maximum stated runtime at the lowest brightness setting — manufacturers often advertise runtime figures based on the dimmest available setting, which can be dramatically longer than realistic runtime at a brighter, more practically useful setting for actual activity.
