Sleeping bag temperature ratings look like a single simple number, but that number can mean three genuinely different things depending on which one a manufacturer chose to print on the label.
Comfort, Limit, and Extreme aren't the same rating
Most sleeping bags today are tested under a standardized international method (ISO 23537, which replaced the older EN 13537 standard — functionally the same test for shopping purposes) using a heated manikin in controlled lab conditions. That test produces several different numbers:
- Comfort — the lowest temperature at which a relaxed sleeper, modeled as a colder sleeper, can sleep through the night without feeling cold.
- Limit — a lower, colder temperature, modeled on a curled-up, warmer sleeper — the point where they can just about get through the night without feeling cold.
- Extreme — a survival-only threshold, not a comfort rating at all. It describes the temperature at which hypothermia risk becomes a real concern within a few hours, not a temperature you'd want to actually sleep at.
The catch: manufacturers don't consistently publish all three numbers, and it's not always obvious which one is printed on a given bag. A bag advertised as "20°F" could be referencing either its Comfort or its Limit rating, and those two numbers for the same bag can differ by 10 degrees or more. If a listing doesn't specify which rating it's showing, it's worth checking the manufacturer's own spec page or contacting them directly rather than assuming.
Buy colder than you think you need
Real-world conditions — wind, humidity, an insulating pad underneath that's worse than the one used in lab testing, individual variation in how warm or cold someone naturally sleeps — all mean actual comfort in the field tends to run colder than the lab rating suggests. Many experienced backpackers deliberately choose a bag rated meaningfully colder (some suggest 10–15°F colder) than the lowest temperature they actually expect to encounter, treating the rating as a limit to buy a safety margin under, not a target to buy exactly to.
The one thing people forget
An underinsulated sleeping pad undermines even an excellent sleeping bag — a sleeping bag's rating assumes a reasonably insulated pad underneath, since a large share of heat loss on the ground happens through direct contact and conduction, not just through the air around you. Pairing a high-quality cold-weather bag with a thin, poorly insulated pad is one of the most common reasons someone ends up colder than the bag's rating would suggest.
