How to Buy a Fish Tank Filter

The three filtration types work on different principles, and a good filter needs all three, not just one.

A fish tank filter's real job spans three distinct types of filtration, and a well-rounded filter needs to handle all three, not just the one most visibly marketed.

Mechanical, biological, and chemical filtration are different jobs

Mechanical filtration physically traps floating debris and particles as water passes through a filter pad or sponge, keeping the water visually clear. Biological filtration relies on beneficial bacteria colonizing surfaces within the filter (often a sponge or specialized bio-media) to process ammonia and nitrite into less harmful nitrate — the same nitrogen cycle process central to a tank's overall health, with the filter serving as the primary location these bacteria colonies actually live. Chemical filtration, usually through activated carbon or similar media, removes dissolved impurities, odors, and discoloration from the water.

A filter that only handles one of these — clear water from mechanical filtration alone, for instance — isn't providing complete filtration, since visual clarity says nothing about whether harmful ammonia and nitrite are actually being processed. Checking that a filter provides real biological filtration capacity, not just mechanical clearing, matters more to actual fish health than water clarity alone suggests.

Rinse filter media in tank water, not tap water

Rinsing filter media (particularly sponges and bio-media hosting the beneficial bacteria colonies) under tap water can kill much of that beneficial bacteria, since tap water often contains chlorine or chloramine specifically intended to kill bacteria — a direct threat to the same bacteria colonies the filter's biological filtration depends on. Rinsing media gently in water removed from the tank itself during a water change preserves those bacteria colonies far better than rinsing under the tap, a small habit that matters a lot for maintaining a filter's actual biological filtration capacity over time.

Filter type should match tank size and bioload

Sponge filters are gentle, simple, and well suited to smaller tanks or tanks with delicate fish or fry that could be harmed by stronger water flow. Hang-on-back (HOB) filters are a common, versatile middle option for many standard home tank setups. Canister filters offer the most filtration capacity and are generally used for larger tanks or heavily stocked tanks with a higher bioload, where a smaller filter wouldn't provide adequate capacity. Undersizing a filter for a tank's actual size and fish population is a common setup mistake that leads to poor water quality despite regular water changes.

The one thing people forget

Don't fully replace all filter media at once during routine maintenance — replacing everything simultaneously removes most of the established biological filtration capacity all at once, effectively restarting part of the nitrogen cycle process. Replacing filter media in stages, keeping some established media in place while introducing new media, maintains more consistent biological filtration through routine maintenance.
