How to Buy a Motorcycle Helmet

Why the legally required US standard isn't the most rigorous one, and what each certification sticker actually verifies.

A motorcycle helmet's safety certification is the one part of the purchase that's genuinely measurable and testable — everything else about a helmet (style, brand, how it looks) is comparatively subjective.

The four main styles

Full-face helmets, including a fixed chin bar, offer the most complete coverage and the best protection in a crash, including for the face and jaw — an area of real, documented impact risk that other styles leave exposed. Modular helmets offer similar coverage with a chin bar that flips up, trading a small amount of structural rigidity at that hinge for the convenience of talking or drinking without fully removing the helmet. Open-face (three-quarter) helmets cover the top, back, and sides of the head but leave the face exposed, and half helmets cover the least, often just the top of the head. Moving from full-face toward half helmet trades away real, measurable protection for style, airflow, and visibility — this isn't a marketing distinction, it reflects a genuine difference in crash outcomes documented in road safety research.

What the certification stickers actually verify — and the difference that matters most

DOT (FMVSS 218) is the only helmet certification legally required for street use in the US. The detail worth knowing: DOT compliance is self-certified by the manufacturer, with the government only conducting periodic spot-checks on helmets already on the market — it's not independently tested before every helmet reaches shelves the way some other standards are. That's part of why DOT is described as a legal minimum rather than a rigor benchmark.

ECE 22.06 (the current version, mandatory since January 2024, replacing 22.05) is required across most of Europe and widely used internationally. Unlike DOT, ECE requires independent, third-party lab testing of each helmet before sale, and 22.06 specifically added testing for rotational impact forces and a wider range of impact speeds and scenarios — considered by many safety researchers to better reflect real-world crash conditions than DOT's testing alone.

Snell certification is entirely voluntary — manufacturers choose to submit helmets for Snell's independent testing, which has historically emphasized higher-energy impacts, popular among track and racing-focused riders.

The practical takeaway: a helmet only carrying DOT certification has met the US legal minimum, but a helmet carrying ECE 22.06 or Snell certification alongside DOT has passed additional independent testing DOT alone doesn't require.

Fit matters as much as certification

A well-certified helmet that doesn't fit properly — too loose, allowing movement in a crash, or so tight it's simply uncomfortable enough that it gets worn incorrectly or inconsistently — doesn't deliver the protection its certification implies. A helmet should fit snugly with no pressure points, sit level on the head without rocking, and stay in place when you try to roll it off by grabbing the back and pulling forward and up.

The one thing people forget

Replace a helmet after any significant impact, even if it looks undamaged from the outside — the internal energy-absorbing liner is generally designed to crush and absorb impact only once, and that damage often isn't visible externally. Many manufacturers also recommend replacing a helmet every five years or so regardless of impact history, since the liner materials can degrade with age and UV exposure even without a crash.
