Snow chains work differently from every other piece of winter driving equipment — they're a temporary, speed-limited traction aid, not a permanent upgrade like a winter tire.
Chains have a real, low maximum speed limit
Unlike winter tires, tire chains are only rated for low speeds, typically around 30 mph (50 km/h) or less, and manufacturer instructions are usually explicit about this limit. Driving faster than the rated speed risks damaging the chains, the vehicle, or both, and chains are only intended for temporary use in genuinely snowy or icy conditions — not for extended highway driving. This is a fundamentally different use case than winter tires, which are simply driven normally for an entire season.
Fit needs to be confirmed before winter, not during an emergency
Tire chains need to match the specific tire size mounted on the vehicle, and fit can vary enough between chain types and tire models that a first-time fitting is much better done at home, in good conditions, than attempted for the first time on the side of a snowy road in an emergency. Practicing the installation process once in a driveway before it's actually needed saves real time and frustration during genuine winter conditions later.
Cable chains vs. traditional link chains
Cable-style chains use a lighter, more flexible cable design, generally easier and faster to install than traditional link chains, and are gentler on both the tire and the vehicle's wheel wells — a reasonable choice for occasional, milder snow conditions. Traditional link chains are more aggressive and provide stronger traction in more severe snow and ice conditions, but are heavier, slower to install, and can be rougher on the vehicle and ride quality — better suited to genuinely severe conditions where maximum traction matters more than convenience or ride comfort.
Some vehicles and locations restrict or require specific traction devices
Certain vehicles, particularly those with limited wheel well clearance, may not accommodate certain chain types at all, and checking the vehicle manual for chain compatibility is worth doing before buying any specific chain product. Separately, some mountain roads and specific regions have legal requirements mandating chains or approved traction devices during posted conditions — worth checking local requirements for a specific route rather than assuming any traction device satisfies a posted chain requirement.
The one thing people forget
Remove chains once back on a clear, chain-free road surface, rather than continuing to drive on chains longer than the actual snowy or icy section requires. Driving on chains over dry pavement for an extended distance accelerates wear on both the chains and the road surface, and increases vibration and noise, well beyond what's needed once the actual traction-limited conditions have passed.
