Tires are one of the few car parts with a genuinely simple, built-in way to check if they need replacing — no gauge or tool required.
The wear bar test
Every modern tire has small raised bars molded into the bottom of the tread grooves, spaced around the tire. As the tread wears down, these wear bars stay the same height while the surrounding tread rubber gets shorter — once the tread is worn flush with the bars, the tire has reached the end of its safe usable life, regardless of how it looks otherwise. A quick visual check across a few points around each tire is often enough to tell if replacement is overdue.
Why matching all four matters
Tires affect how a vehicle handles, brakes, and grips in wet or slippery conditions — and mismatched tread depth or tire type across the four corners of a car can create inconsistent grip that's genuinely harder to control in an emergency maneuver, not just a minor performance quirk. Many manufacturers and mechanics recommend replacing tires in pairs at minimum (both fronts or both rears together) and ideally as a full set, rather than replacing just the single worst tire.
Reading the size code
The size printed on a tire's sidewall (something like 225/45R17) encodes the tire's width in millimeters, the sidewall's height as a percentage of that width (the "aspect ratio"), the construction type, and the wheel diameter it fits, in inches. When replacing tires, matching this code to the vehicle's specified size (usually on a sticker inside the driver's door or in the owner's manual) is the starting point — deviating from it changes handling characteristics and, in some cases, speedometer accuracy.
The one thing people forget
Check tire pressure regularly with your own gauge, not just when a dashboard warning light comes on — many tire pressure monitoring systems only alert once pressure has already dropped significantly. Correct tire pressure affects fuel efficiency, handling, and even tread wear evenness, and it's one of the cheapest, easiest maintenance checks that a lot of drivers simply never do.
