Windshield wiper shopping is simple in principle but has a couple of details that are genuinely easy to get wrong.
The two blades often need different lengths
Most vehicles use a driver-side blade that's a different length from the passenger-side blade, matched to the windshield's specific curvature and wiper arm geometry — buying two identical-length blades, or a generic "one size" set, can mean one blade doesn't sweep the glass as intended. Checking a vehicle-specific fitment chart (widely available from wiper manufacturers by make, model, and year) rather than guessing or matching old blades by eye avoids this common mismatch.
Wiper blades wear out faster than most drivers expect
The rubber wiping edge degrades from UV exposure, temperature swings, and simple repeated use, typically recommended for replacement roughly every six months to a year depending on climate and usage — noticeably more often than many drivers actually replace them. Streaking, skipping, squeaking, or visible cracking in the rubber are all signs a blade is past its effective life, even if it still physically moves back and forth normally.
Beam blades vs. conventional frame blades
Conventional (frame-style) blades use a metal frame with several pressure points holding the rubber against the curved glass — effective, widely available, and generally the most affordable option. Beam-style blades use a single, more flexible spine that distributes pressure more evenly along the entire blade length, generally providing more consistent contact with the glass and often quieter, smoother operation, at a higher price than conventional blades. Beam blades tend to perform noticeably better specifically in snow and ice, since they resist the buildup and freezing between joints that can affect a conventional frame blade's multiple pivot points.
Winter-specific blades trade appearance for cold-weather function
Winter wiper blades encase the metal frame in a rubber boot, preventing ice and snow from building up in and jamming the frame's moving joints — a real functional benefit for climates with regular snow and ice, at the cost of looking noticeably bulkier than a standard blade. For climates without meaningful snow and ice, this specific design offers little advantage over a standard quality blade.
The one thing people forget
Check and top off windshield washer fluid regularly, especially before winter, and use a fluid rated for freezing temperatures in cold climates rather than plain water or a warm-weather-only fluid, which can freeze in the reservoir or lines. Even a brand-new set of wiper blades can't compensate for an empty reservoir or frozen fluid when trying to clear road grime or salt spray from the windshield.
