Winter tire performance comes down to genuine rubber chemistry, not marketing — and there's a specific, well-established temperature threshold worth knowing.
The 45°F rule
Tire rubber compounds change behavior with temperature. All-season tire rubber begins stiffening below about 45°F (7°C), reducing grip on cold roads even before any snow appears — this isn't just a winter-specific concern, it affects dry-road braking and handling too, since hardened rubber simply doesn't grip pavement as well regardless of surface. Winter tires use a different, softer compound specifically formulated to stay flexible and grippy at and below that same threshold.
The rule runs in both directions: winter tires shouldn't be left on through warmer months either. Above roughly 45-50°F, a winter tire's soft compound gets too soft, wearing rapidly and actually handling worse than an appropriate warm-weather tire — winter tires aren't simply "always fine, just unnecessary" once it warms up; they genuinely underperform and degrade faster in the wrong temperature range, in the opposite direction from all-season tires in the cold.
"M+S" is not the same as a real winter certification
Many all-season tires carry an "M+S" (Mud and Snow) marking, which is based on tread block geometry and spacing — not a certified test of actual snow or ice performance. This is worth knowing because it's easy to assume any tire marked for snow has been tested and verified for real winter performance, when the M+S mark alone doesn't confirm that. A separate marking, the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol, does indicate a tire has passed a specific, standardized severe snow traction test — checking for this symbol specifically, rather than the M+S marking alone, is a more reliable way to confirm genuine winter-rated performance.
Regional winter severity changes the calculation
For areas with mild winters and only occasional light snow, a quality all-season tire may provide adequate performance without a seasonal tire swap. For regions with sustained cold temperatures, real snow accumulation, or icy conditions, dedicated winter tires provide a genuine, measurable safety improvement in braking distance and handling that an all-season tire's compromise design can't match, regardless of tread pattern.
The one thing people forget
If only running two winter tires rather than a full set of four (a compromise some drivers make for cost reasons), put them on the rear axle regardless of whether the vehicle is front-wheel, rear-wheel, or all-wheel drive — mismatched grip between the front and rear axles, with better grip only in front, can cause the rear of the vehicle to lose traction unpredictably during cornering or braking, which is generally considered a more dangerous handling failure than reduced front grip. Most tire manufacturers and safety organizations specifically recommend a full set of four winter tires rather than a partial set for exactly this reason.
